My Favorite Quilt Blocks: 2022

Here are a few of my favorite quilt blocks from the ones I sewed in my first year of sewing, 2022. Larger versions are available on Flickr. This is part one of two posts.

My favorite block from my first year of sewing is the 12″ Blazing Star, designed by Eleanor Burns. It has a wonderful 3D effect caused by light and dark blues on the inner part of the star and yellow and green for the outer points. The background is black with white polka dots which really makes things pop!

Next up is a 10″ block, derived from the Big Churn block. Missouri Quilt released this design and called it Spring Rain.
Mine is called Spring Rain with Cats. I love how the cats are peeking out, and note that the roses are “fussy cut.”

In a more classic vein, I created this variation of the Ohio Star, a (split) Ohio Star. This block is 12 inches square and is colored using red, white and blue fabrics.

Shortly after I began learning to sew, Russia invaded Ukraine. This 8″ variable star was created to honor and support Ukraine. The middle block represents the soil, the yellow stars their wheat, and the blue and green the sky and ground.

The official name is Wings, but given all the offset points, I’m calling it (Keep me) Humble Block.

Skipping ahead to the end of the year, here is another variable star, all decorated for the holidays.
