Recently I’ve been distracted both by setting up my model railroad display for the holidays as well as playing a rail road simulation that includes models of model railroads. Virtual model railroads in other words!
I’ll have photos of the real model railroad soon, but for now, here are some screen shots of a virtual model railroad, taken from the sim known as Trainz 2022 (TRS22).
Trainz models many types of railroads, including fairly accurate representations of famous lines such as the Tehachapi Loop as well as many user generated maps.
Many folks use the built-in rail focused CAD tool to design entire fantasy railroads. Those can be quite detailed and offer a lot of rail related simulation activity.
But my current favorite is the set of routes that are models of model railroads.
Yes, it’s turtles all the way down, as you start examining the wide variety of fantasy layouts that would for the most part be impractical to build in the real world.
Here are some screen shots from two of my favorites, the Innter Kohn Necktion Railroad and the Cilie Oldphartz Logging RRCo.
Innter and Necktion are two small ports in close proximity. The two ports are connected by a railroad running through challenging terrain up to a plateau and through the town of Kohn, giving “The Innter Kohn Necktion Railroad”.
Oldphartz has a saw mill, a workshop, locomotive facilities, a small MoW (Maintenance of Way) Depot, a steamship wharf and a railroad ferry barge that links the town to the mainland.
