On Friday January 21, 2005, John C. Magnuson, CPA filed by petition for the office of mayor of Lindsborg, KS.
Mr. Magnuson was born in Lindsborg and was raised on a farm south of Lindsborg. He graduated from Lindsborg High School, attended Bethany College and graduated from Washburn University with a BBA with emphasis in accounting. After working for several years as a CPA in Kansas City he opened the first CPA practice in Lindsborg in 1974. His practice included the auditing of numerous governmental units. He sold that business to Larry Douglas, CPA in 1990 to take a position as a city finance director in Ottumwa, IA. Preferring the private sector he returned to Lindsborg in 1992 and has been in the insurance and investment business since that time including being a District Sales Coordinator for AFLAC from 1996 until retiring from that position in 2004.
John is married to Darlene, an RN at the Lindsborg Rural Health Clinic and they have two children, Charlice Saunders of Lenexa and Barry Magnuson of Kansas City.
He was a McPherson County Commissioner from 1983 to 1990 and during that time was on the National Association of Counties Tax and Finance Committee for six years, testified before Congress regarding infrastructure needs in rural communities, was chairman of the Kansas County Commissioners Association Tax and Finance Committee and served on the board of the Kansas Association of Counties.
Mr. Magnuson stated that he is breaking his own rule to run for this position. He has told people over the years that he had no desire to run for public office again. However, after being approached by dozens of people and observing the mayor over the past two terms he feels that he can no longer sit on the sidelines.
