We coming back from Wichita on Tuesday (Sheryl had her staples removed, and is recovering nicely from her hip replacement surgery), and had just turned onto Ridge Road north of Hesston, when I spotted this dramatic scene. There was a very large storm directly south of us, and to the west I could see both plumes of smoke (from wheat field burn-off) as well as another storm, highlighted by sunlight on both sides.
I thought it was “just” a massive rain storm, but as we later found out, the winds were so strong that most of the power poles delivering power to Moundridge were taken out by the storm. We headed over to McPherson via highway 56 and the leading edge of the storm was hitting just as we arrived; very strong, gusty winds!
Here are a few photos, including a closeup of the storm. It’s relatively small as these things go, but given the destruction, it was large enough!
