I just discovered the works of William Gedney. He was a photographer and writer who was active from the 1950s through the early 1980s and in locales ranging from both coasts of the US to India and Europe.
Gedney photograhed a wide variety of people in a wide variety of settings, and was able to capture an uninhibited, natural view of people involved in a variety day to day activities and poses.
Duke University hosts an archive of his work, which includes over 4900 photos as well as his journals and photo notes.
And, there’s a treat for deadheads! While taking photographs in San Francisco in 1967, Gedney managed to capture 2 good photos of Pigpen, the bluesy frontman for a youthful, energetic Grateful Dead.
