The interview was conducted by Ed Cone between sets at an Easter weekend Grateful Dead concert at Irvine Meadows, Irvine CA, in 1987.
Though short, the interview is interesting in a couple of ways. First, the notion of doing what you love, of finding projects that you can embrace, to follow your bliss as Joseph Campbell advised, resonates with me. To a large degree I’m blessed that my interests, both personal and professional, intersect in such a manner I often find myself completely and happily absorbed by the project of the [day|week|…].
In addition, the reference to J.L. Borges, the Argentine writer, poet and philosopher, piqued my interest. My previous exposure to his work was via a fictional description of a Chinese Encylopedia, the Celestial Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge, which outlines how animals are to be divided, including 7. stray dogs and 11. those drawn with a very fine camelhair brush.
